Spanish giants FC Barcelona have reportedly decided not to renew Robert Lewandowski’s contract, paving the way for the veteran striker’s exit from the club next summer.
According to Diario Sport, the decision marks the end of an era for the Polish international, who will leave as a free agent at age 37 after an impressive stint with the Catalan side.
End of the Lewandowski Era at Barcelona
Lewandowski, who joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022, has been one of the club’s most consistent performers, providing crucial goals and leadership through a challenging rebuilding phase.
However, Barcelona’s management is now looking to rejuvenate their attack with a younger striker as part of their long-term project under Xavi Hernández.
Future Uncertain: Europe or Retirement?
Sources close to the player suggest that while Barcelona had considered renewing his deal to potentially sell him to clubs in Saudi Arabia, Lewandowski is not keen on a Middle Eastern move.
Instead, he is believed to prefer staying in Europe, possibly in a less demanding league, as his family — particularly his wife Anna Lewandowska — wish to remain based in Catalonia.
Whether he opts to continue playing for one or two more years or chooses to retire from professional football remains to be seen.
What This Means for Barcelona
Lewandowski’s departure will leave a significant gap in Barcelona’s frontline. The club is now expected to target a younger forward as part of their 2025 summer rebuild, with several names already linked, including Vitor Roque and Erling Haaland.
This move also highlights Barcelona’s ongoing efforts to manage their wage bill and comply with La Liga’s financial fair play regulations.
