The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have confirmed the arrest of two men described as soccer players in connection with the trafficking of 750 kilograms of dagga (marijuana) — a major breakthrough in the country’s ongoing fight against drug smuggling.
In an official statement released via X.com (formerly Twitter), the ZRP identified the suspects as Tumai Matsika, also known as Abas Amidu (29), and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41).
Details of the Arrest
According to police reports, the duo was apprehended on October 3, 2025, along the Kwekwe – Kadoma Highway. The suspects were allegedly transporting a massive 750kg consignment of dagga, with an estimated street value of USD 75,000, in a silver Honda Shuttle (registration number AGP 6776).
Authorities said the interception followed an ongoing intelligence-led operation targeting drug trafficking networks operating between central Zimbabwe and urban hubs.
🧩 Part of a Wider Operation
Police officials confirmed that this seizure is part of a larger anti-narcotics crackdown, which also led to a separate but related drug recovery earlier in the week. The ZRP emphasized its commitment to dismantling organized drug trafficking rings and urged citizens to report suspicious activities in their communities.
“We will not relent in our fight against illegal drug activities threatening the health and safety of our nation,” said a ZRP spokesperson.
Suspects Identified as ‘Soccer Players’
The revelation that the arrested individuals are reportedly linked to the football community has sparked public debate on social media, with users expressing shock and disappointment. The ZRP has not yet confirmed whether the suspects were actively playing for any registered club at the time of the arrest.
Investigation Ongoing
The two suspects are expected to appear in court soon as investigations continue. The ZRP has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward drug-related offenses, warning that anyone caught engaging in such crimes will face the full weight of the law.
