Manila – A Powerful Quake Sparks Regional Tsunami Alerts
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck offshore in the southern Philippines on Friday morning, prompting widespread panic, structural damage, and tsunami warnings across multiple countries.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the quake struck in waters near Manay town in Davao Oriental, within the Mindanao region, at a depth of 20 km.
The agency initially reported a magnitude of 7.6 but later revised it down to 7.5.
Tsunami Warnings Across Asia-Pacific
Following the powerful quake, both Phivolcs and the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued tsunami alerts, warning of potentially hazardous waves for coastal areas within 300 km of the epicenter.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said waves between 1 and 3 metres above normal tide levels were possible in coastal areas of the Philippines, while Indonesia and Palau also issued local tsunami warnings.
“People in coastal towns in the central and southern Philippines should immediately evacuate to higher ground or move further inland,”
Phivolcs said in an emergency bulletin.
President Marcos: ‘Help Will Reach Everyone’
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr assured the nation that the government is closely monitoring the situation and preparing search-and-rescue operations where needed.
“We are working round the clock to ensure that help reaches everyone who needs it,”
Marcos said in an official statement, adding that response teams would be deployed once it is safe.
Local authorities in Davao Oriental reported widespread panic, with some buildings suffering visible damage.
“Some buildings were reported to have been damaged. It was very strong,”
said Governor Edwin Jubahib, speaking to Philippine broadcaster DZMM.
Aftershocks and Rescue Preparations
Phivolcs warned of aftershocks and possible secondary quakes, advising residents to remain cautious and stay away from damaged structures.
Rescue teams are being mobilized across the region, though authorities said operations may be delayed until tsunami warnings are lifted and the situation stabilizes.
Regional Impact: Indonesia and Palau on Alert
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) issued a tsunami warning for the northern Sulawesi and Papua regions, while Palau authorities also urged residents near the coast to move inland.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) recorded the quake at 7.4 magnitude with a depth of 58 km, indicating a strong and shallow tremor capable of generating significant sea waves.
Background: The Philippines on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’
The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most active seismic zones, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently.
The latest event comes just two weeks after a deadly 6.9-magnitude quake struck the island of Cebu, killing at least 72 people — the country’s deadliest earthquake in more than a decade.
The nation experiences over 800 earthquakes each year, though most are too weak to cause damage.
Conclusion
The 7.5 magnitude earthquake that rocked the southern Philippines has sent shockwaves across the Asia-Pacific region, triggering tsunami warnings and raising fears of further aftershocks.
Authorities are urging calm and vigilance as emergency teams assess the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
