The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have confirmed the arrest of Sydney Mubaiwa Matsikiti, a wanted suspect, in Marondera on October 6, 2025, in connection with the possession of dangerous drugs and unregistered medicines.
According to a police statement released on October 7, 2025, via their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the arrest took place at the Rudhaka Dombotombo open grounds, bringing to an end a short police pursuit that began after Matsikiti allegedly evaded capture the previous day.
The Arrest and Police Operation
Police reports indicate that officers had been tracking Matsikiti for several days following intelligence that linked him to illegal drug activities in the Mashonaland East region.
On October 6, law enforcement agents closed in on the suspect at Rudhaka Dombotombo, leading to a brief chase before he was successfully apprehended. During the arrest, officers recovered a substantial consignment of illicit substances and unregistered pharmaceutical products believed to be destined for local distribution.
The recovered items are undergoing forensic analysis as authorities continue their investigations to determine the full scope of Matsikiti’s alleged drug network.
Official Police Statement
The ZRP confirmed the arrest in a public notice, stating:
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of wanted person Sydney Mubaiwa Matsikiti in Marondera for unlawful possession of dangerous drugs and unregistered medicines. The suspect was apprehended at Rudhaka Dombotombo open grounds following a brief pursuit. Investigations are underway.”
The statement also urged the public to report any suspicious drug-related activities, emphasizing the police’s ongoing crackdown on illegal narcotics across the country.
National Drug Crackdown Continues
This arrest marks the latest in a series of nationwide drug enforcement operations aimed at dismantling supply chains and curbing the rise of illegal substances in Zimbabwe.
Over recent months, the ZRP has intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking, illegal pharmaceuticals, and substance abuse, with several arrests and confiscations reported in major urban centers including Harare, Bulawayo, and Mutare.
Authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance, warning that anyone found dealing or distributing illicit drugs will face the full weight of the law.
Community Impact
Drug abuse remains a pressing concern in Zimbabwe, with young people being the most affected. Law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with community organizations, continue to conduct awareness campaigns and rehabilitation initiatives aimed at reducing substance dependence and restoring community well-being.
ZRP Appeals for Public Cooperation
The ZRP has encouraged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspected drug activities to their nearest police station or through the official ZRP hotline.
“Together, we can make Zimbabwe a safer, drug-free nation,” the statement concluded.
