A 33-year-old driver has been sentenced to two years in prison by the Mbare Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of culpable homicide following a fatal road accident earlier this year.
Nyasha Muteweye was found guilty of causing the death of a passenger through negligent driving while operating a Toyota Hiace on February 5, 2026.
The court also cancelled his driver’s licence and banned him from operating Class 2 vehicles for two years.
The accident occurred around midnight along Simon Mazorodze Road toward Waterfalls.
Court findings revealed that Muteweye allowed a passenger to hang onto the rear of the moving vehicle while also travelling at excessive speed.
As the vehicle approached Chinzou Roundabout, he reportedly failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to swerve violently.
The passenger fell from the vehicle and suffered critical injuries before later dying at Sally Mugabe Hospital five days after the crash.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said the case involved multiple acts of negligence, including unsafe passenger conduct and failure to maintain control of the vehicle.
