The Zimbabwean government has announced a major policy change requiring that all payments to local suppliers be made exclusively in the domestic currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). The directive was confirmed by Mthuli Ncube, the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s local currency.

According to Minister Ncube, the new measure is designed to increase the use of Zimbabwe Gold in the economy and reduce the government’s reliance on foreign currency when paying for goods and services within the country.

The policy forms part of the economic strategy outlined in the 2026 National Budget, with the government positioning itself as the main driver of local currency adoption across both public institutions and the wider economy.

A key component of this strategy is the introduction of a National Standard Price List, a framework that will establish reference prices for commonly purchased goods and services. Under this system, all government ministries, departments, and agencies will be required to follow a standardized pricing structure when procuring goods and services.

Officials say the framework aims to ensure value for money, improve transparency, and reduce inflated pricing by suppliers and contractors involved in public procurement.

Minister Ncube emphasized that by leading the transition itself, the government intends to create consistent demand for the Zimbabwe Gold currency. As a result, both existing and new local suppliers will now receive payments strictly in ZiG for goods and services provided to the State.

To support the implementation of the policy, the Treasury has already issued detailed guidelines to all government institutions through Treasury Circular No. 4 of 2026. The directive is also being reinforced by the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe to ensure that the pricing framework and payment system are applied consistently across the public sector.

Authorities believe the move will stabilize procurement processes, control government spending, and strengthen the role of Zimbabwe’s domestic currency in everyday economic transactions.
