A resident of Tynwald suburb in Harare has reportedly been fined about US$12,450.50 by the City of Harare for constructing a speed hump without approval, in violation of the Roads Act.
In a letter dated December 5, 2025, the City’s Director of Works, Isiah Chawatama, stated that the speed hump was built without the required authorization. The homeowner has been ordered to pay the penalty within seven days, failing which the amount will be added to their municipal rates account.
The resident has also been instructed to remove the speed hump within 48 hours.
Authorities have emphasized that the installation of traffic calming measures such as speed humps must be carried out by qualified civil engineers and in accordance with city by-laws. Unauthorized structures pose serious safety risks to motorists and pedestrians.
A similar incident occurred when the army unilaterally erected a speed hump along Seke Road in front of Kabrit Barracks. That hump was later removed after a few days for being illegal and was reportedly linked to several accidents in the area.
This case serves as a reminder that all road modifications must follow legal and engineering standards to ensure public safety.
