A group of suspects has allegedly been defrauding EcoCash users through fraudulent “Free Airtime” links that have been circulating on social media and messaging platforms. Authorities have since launched investigations into the scheme, recovering several Econet lines believed to have been used in the scam.

According to officials, the scam operated through deceptive messages inviting users to “click and win airtime.” Once victims clicked on the links, they were reportedly redirected to fake pages designed to harvest personal information or gain unauthorized access to EcoCash accounts. Authorities have strongly warned the public that any link promising free airtime rewards is highly likely to be fraudulent.

The individuals named in connection with the case are Mpho Ruzwidzo (22), Ishmael Muzanenhamo, Moses Shingirai Chawatama (24), Usher Forester Mubaiwa (26), Panashe Wesley Gonzo (22), Tinashe Gonzo (24), Eddington Leeroy Mazonde (21), Calvin Takudzwa Masiyandaita (23), Shawn Goodmore Chikangaidze (22), Billy Zawe (21), and Dilan Macheka (22).

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged members of the public to remain vigilant when receiving unsolicited promotional links. EcoCash users are advised never to share personal identification numbers, verification codes, or banking details with unknown sources and to report suspicious messages immediately.

This case serves as a reminder of the growing threat of digital scams and the importance of exercising caution in the online space.
