Police in Harare have destroyed substantial quantities of illegal drugs and controlled substances that were seized from suspected dealers, following the successful conclusion of several court cases this month.
The destroyed exhibits included 292.894 kilogrammes of crystal meth, 171.024 kilogrammes of mbanje, and 128.662 litres of cough syrups commonly abused as intoxicants. Authorities also disposed of 15 litres of illicit alcoholic beverages, 100 litres of illegal Zimbo Vodka, 77 kilogrammes of skin-lightening creams, and 86 kilogrammes of assorted unregistered medicines.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed that the destruction of the substances was carried out after the courts finalized the respective cases and issued formal directives for their disposal. He emphasized that the process was coordinated in line with Government regulations and standard operating procedures.
The move forms part of the ongoing nationwide campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse, which authorities say remains a major threat to communities, particularly young people. Police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations targeting drug peddlers and suppliers across the country.
Law enforcement officials have urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities as the fight against illicit substances continues.
