he Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has moved decisively to curb what it has described as “academic gluttony,” issuing an immediate nationwide directive limiting the number of subjects students can register for in national examinations. The move is aimed at protecting the integrity of the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) system and restoring the intended focus of Ordinary and Advanced Level education.

In a circular sent to school heads across the country, the ministry announced strict enforcement measures that will see students capped at a maximum of nine subjects at Ordinary Level and three subjects at Advanced Level. Authorities say the new limits are designed to discourage excessive subject accumulation and promote meaningful academic specialization.

The policy shift follows intense debate sparked by a high-achieving student from Pamushana High School in Masvingo, who recently sat for an unprecedented 12 A-Level subjects, walking away with a record-breaking 56 points. While the achievement drew widespread praise and admiration on social media, it also set off alarm bells within government circles.

Education officials acknowledged the student’s exceptional intellect but argued that such extreme “point chasing” defeats the core purpose of A-Level education, which is meant to prepare learners for focused tertiary studies rather than sheer numerical excellence. The ministry stressed that the system must balance celebrating brilliance with maintaining fairness, sustainability, and academic standards.

With the new directive now in effect, schools have been instructed to comply immediately, marking a significant shift in Zimbabwe’s examination culture and signaling a return to specialization over subject accumulation.
