South African police have arrested a 43-year-old Zimbabwean after uncovering a large stash of passports and cash during a vehicle stop — in what authorities describe as a suspected “passport-smuggling operation.”
The arrest took place on 8 December 2025 near Waterval Boven, Mpumalanga. Police intercepted a white Chevrolet Utility bakkie with Gauteng registration plates after receiving a tip-off about suspicious activity.
A search of the vehicle revealed 582 passports belonging to Malawian, Zimbabwean, and Mozambican nationals — many with cash hidden inside — concealed in a hidden compartment. Officers also seized a total of R147,300 in cash, including about R20,000 found in a plastic bag.
Authorities believe the driver was heading to a border gate with the passports, likely to have them stamped, suggesting the man may have been offering “passport-stamping for cash” services.
The suspect has been charged under South Africa’s Immigration Act, as well as for fraud and money laundering. His vehicle was seized, and he is due to appear in the Waterval Boven Periodical Court.
The dramatic bust highlights ongoing efforts by South African authorities to crack down on fraudulent passport-stamping syndicates and cross-border crime networks.
