Kuwadzana Member of Parliament Chalton Hwende has called for a review of housing loan allocations for legislators, proposing that each MP should receive at least US$150,000 to enable them to purchase or build decent homes.
Speaking during a recent session, Hwende argued that the current US$40,000 housing loan provided to MPs is inadequate, especially given inflation and the rising cost of property across the country.
“We received housing loans worth US$40k, but because of inflation and compared to what those in the Executive received, we also want you to budget a minimum of US$150k as a loan that will ensure an MP gets a house,” Hwende said.
The proposal has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the idea of fair compensation for public officials, while others argue that priority should be placed on improving civil service wages and public infrastructure.
